When your housemate hits the road to visit her boyfriend in Stellenbosch and you feel like cooking dinner; even though its a dinner party for one, you can always go to Tasty on facebook and boom – recipes galore…
Most of my friends will confirm I love potatoes, I love cheese and naturally I love bacon – call me a bacon slut if you like. Anyway, so I facebook stalked a little (don’t act like you don’t do this when procrastinating) and then made my way to Tasty, just to find a recipe that has all that and more.
You will need:
- 5 x potatoes.
- salt and pepper
- sliced cheese (if you are lazy just get the sliced cheese at the store, no need to do it yourself ;))
- sliced ham
- grated matured cheese (again, you can purchase grated cheese if you are lazy – no shame, I did just that)
- cooked diced bacon
- 2 x eggs
- 1 cup heavy cream (luckily you don’t get fat from soulfood – that’s my story and I’m sticking to it)
Don’t forget the wine though, this is an important aspect of cooking, add the music and let’s get going.
Start by preheating the oven at 190° C
now grab a glass and fill it with wine, take the first sip with enthusiasm and now get to work.
Start by peeling the potatoes and the slice them.
Place the sliced potatoes in a bowl and season with salt and pepper, I went easy on the salt purely because bacon is fabulously salty in it self.
Make sure to cook the bacon before adding to other ingredients.
Start by placing a layer of potatoes in a baking dish (one you have oiled or sprayed with spray n cook), place half of the ham over the potatoes covering them all, top that with the sliced cheese and off to the second layer.
after placing the second layer of potatoes, ham and sliced cheese, go ahead a spread the bacon bits over evenly.
add another layer of potatoes on top of the bacon and top it off with the grated cheese covering every inch of the dish.
STOP: don’t slack on enjoying your wine.
okay, now back to working our culinary magic: in a separate bowl mix the cup of cream and the two eggs, poor this mixture over your prepped dish and place in the oven.
Let that bake for 40min or until you have a golden brown layer of cheese on the top and potatoes are cooked to perfection.
Let that cool down fir a few minutes, finish that glass and fill it up before you dish.
I have to say I was pretty impressed with myself and you will be too.
Invite the girls over for dinner, spoil your guests at the next braai, no matter the occasion it will be a sin not to share this one with loved ones.
